Melingriffith Well

The well, situated on Forest Farm road (opposite Ffordd Morganwwg) and believed to be c1740, used to serve residents of Forest Farm, including the now-demolished ‘New Houses’, a row of terraced cottages opposite the well (see photo below left). Children from the cottages are pictured left, sitting on the well wall, which can just be seen.
The well was renowned for its quality and coldness. On Fridays, payday, local children would take the water up to the Melingriffith tin plate works and sell it to the workers who would throw a few pennies to the children.

The well covered with garden waste
Over the years people have been dumping waste in the well. Besides polluting the water course, the well is likely to form part of a future heritage trail on Forest Farm and Glamorganshire canal. Although the well is not listed, it is of important local relevance.
Friends of Forest Farm recently held a volunteer day to clear the well.
We remind the public that the well should not be used for dumping waste. If you see anyone dumping waste, please report them to 101 or Cardiff council Tel 029 20872000, making a note of identification, registration number etc.
